Alison, Aria, Spencer, Emily, and Hanna were best friends until Alison mysteriously disappears and is eventually found dead at her old home. This shocks the girls, who are devastated to see one of their best friends murdered. As the investigation progresses, the girls receive threatening messages from a stalker known only as 'A'. 'A' threatens to tell their secrets if the girls don't do what 'A' says. The girls all have secrets that could potentially ruin their lives. Aria is in a relationship with the new English teacher Ezra Fitz. Spencer had a fling with her sister Melissa's boyfriend Ian while he was still together with Melissa (she later kisses her sister's fiancé Wren as well), Emily kissed her friend Maya, and Hanna's mom is in debt. The girls soon reunite after spending a while apart due to Ali's disappearance. They attempt to find out who 'A' is, but they encounter two people from their past, Toby Cavanaugh and Jenna Marshall. Jenna was blinded by one of Ali's pranks, and Toby was blamed for it and sent to reform school. The girls wonder who 'A' is, and how far 'A' is willing to go to harm them.
